"From Childish Hobby To Aerospace Engineering" - SUCCESS STORY #27

Today our world is all about technology and by the time technology becomes more and more inseparable from everyday life. That’s why it is important to teach children about it, since technology does so much for us — including so many of the jobs that were once done by people. So the ability to be creative and have some technical skills may be your child’s most important future asset. One boy — Žilvinas Vinskas — thinks the same and tells us his story about becoming a real engineer and creating his own drones.

The interest in construction was caused by the phenomenon of Žilvinas‘ childhood that things stop working after expanding their details. Growing persistently and destructively, as Žilvinas says, marketed the experience of what can be found in the veins of various things. Fortunately, his parents, even though he was a little burping, supported his interest. When I was about eight, I began to try to pile new things from various parts that I shed from elsewhere. So there were a lot of pile-up machines, boats… Later on, he joined the simulation team, where a boy learned to use simple tools and work with ordinary materials. As he now believes, these skills opened up his hands — then he was able to create and produce completely new things, not just “re-cast.” The warmest memory of those days is a plane made from paper, straws, and toys.

Žilvinas’ passion for constructing became a real-life path when he joined Robotics School at the age of 14. There all needed conditions for developing his further skills were given: this environment allowed to experiment, growth and create and these are the reason why Žilvinas, together with his team-mate built competent line tracking robots, with whom they have won many contests in Lithuania and achieved even greater results on a European scale.

When in 2012 the Unmanned Aircraft Contest was about to happen, Žilvinas, together with his team-mate, decided to grab a chance and become a part of the future by learning how to build drones. And this experience was the main reason for Žilvinas, then just a 16 years old boy, to start making his own drones. Later on, he started collaborating with a company “Skonis ir Kvapas” (“Taste and Scent”), which used his drones to film an expedition in China. Now, this boy can’t believe how quickly this technology became a part of everyday life.

Right now this innovator studies Aero-Cosmo engineering in Netherlands. As he says himself, “The whole experience I have accumulated since 2010 has shown to me that I still have a lot to learn and it also formed a very holistic approach to the problems. Technology is not a magic — it is part of our society and we are responsible for using it correctly. In aerospace engineering studies, I have a number of absurdly intelligent and educated people who look at problems from the academic perspective because they are not yet faced with real life.

So why is it so important to start your actions and create? “In our digital world, access to information is almost unlimited, everyone knows everything, but units can do something. Generations that grow in the world with access to the Internet believe that they can easily find whatever they want. Unfortunately, this illusion blows very fast if you really need to do something. People face the reality that it is not so easy to build something from a scratch. But even failures are thousands of times more valuable than virtual knowledge. Even if something fails, as it is often the case, you know where to go next to what you want to do” — believes Žilvinas.
